This page celebrates Walt Disney's classic 1959 film, Sleeping Beauty.

For as long as I can remember, this version of the tale has always held a special place in my heart. The book was given to my twin sister as a gift. This was the 1970 reprint of the 1957 Big Golden Book that featured cover art by Disney background artist, Eyvind Earle and several of his concept paintings throughout. The book (pictured below) is lavishly illustrated and well written. I remember sitting and staring at the art of this book for hours. I wanted so badly to be a part of Sleeping Beauty's dark yet beautifully rich and gothic world. The colors, shapes and character designs fascinated me. I have to credit the book for inspiring me to study and create art. As I grew older I began to absorb the story and settings. I started looking at other artists' work, typically the more illustrative and graphic styles of artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and Arthur Rackham. I began looking at medieval European art as well and doing a bit of reading up on this turbulent but captivating time in history. Strangely, I didn't actually see the film until I was 11 years old (and this was off of a friend's pirated tape). I finally saw Sleeping Beauty in the theatre in its full glory on March 28, 1986 - I was 16.

I will be continually updating the pages published here. The information I have on this film is so exhaustive that time prevents me from publishing everything at this point. However, this site is new to the web, so in time, I will eventually have all the pages up.
