Shannon's Sleeping Beauty Fan Art
Here is a selection of my original art based on Disney's Sleeping Beauty. This art is not for sale or distribution.
Sleeping Beauty and its characters are the property of The Walt Disney Company and are protected by federal copyright and trademark laws.
Aurora and Phillip share a kiss while Flora, Fauna and Merryweather float above. There's a hidden Mickey that emerged while I was working on this. Can you see him? Completed December, 2007. Colored pencil.
Aurora got her Prince! Here is Phillip and Aurora sharing a blissful moment. Aurora with
bit of a triumphant smile on her face - she really lucked out in the end. I wanted a
bright, sunny image, but I'm not sure I like the yellow background (which is competing with
Aurora's hair). I'm thinking I should have gone with a more cooler palette back there.
Watercolor pencil.
I was prompted to make this when one of the deviantArt clubs ran a 'Christmas Princess' contest. Again, I put Aurora in more period appropriate clothes in what we would consider holiday colors. This was completed on December 11, 2005. I used a fair amount of gouache, watercolor pencils and drawing ink.
I always thought of how traumatizing it must have been for Aurora to learn of her true identity. Even though she had a happy ending with Phillip, the years of her false life must constantly haunt her. When I started working on this piece, I wanted to convey a sort of pensive princess. Not sure if that really comes through in this drawing. I dressed her in a 14th century style gown with romanticized flowing sleeves ("fit to grace a medieval princess???"). :-) And, I kept the blue color scheme to echo the dress she wore in the movie. Watercolor pencils, drawing ink and a bit of gouache.
Here's the Classic Disney Princess lineup: Snow White, Cinderella and Princess Aurora. This was done using Winsor & Newton gouache and Higgins Drawing ink. The linear quality is one I usually use in my fantasy art ... not too sure if it translates well for the princesses. I tried to match the colors as closely to those used in the movie versions. Not an easy task. Aurora's collar is a bit too blue. I think they all need a bit of rouge on their cheeks. But I'm real happy with Cinderella's hair and dress color. And, I had a bit of fun doing this, too.
This is my Sleeping Beauty fan art painting that was done using Winsor & Newton gouache. I did this in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript. The gothic architectural detail was inspired by The Bedford Book of Hours, a beautiful 15th century English illuminated book.
Here's one of my first fan art pictures. Yep, it's crayon on lined, three-hole punch paper. I was 12 years old when I did this. I kept whole notebooks where I drew fantasy art. So, warning to parents...sometimes it's not a phase.
